# Personalized Preparation

## Purpose of Personalization

We personalized practice and development of knowledge and skills necessary to provide Sheltered English instruction (SEI) in inclusive classrooms of all subject areas. We know that participants in our module T210-Z1 come to class with a rich diversity of experiences, skills, interests, and goals for their professional learning. We believe that personalized practice may further individual expertise and demonstrate what personalized learning could look like in Pre-K-12 classrooms. We used a matrix of tasks aligned to [WIDA standards](https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vCFURHISu2prkJu6lwZD6TBZaiAxGXjKab_R1d-8nqk) and [SIOP strategies](https://drive.google.com/open?id=1UAepa0ch6y3a22lNWIbBwyAOc3G9Tota4GNDeQ_QiTk) where participants in T210-Z1 select their own pathway to develop and demonstrate competencies to serve ENLs. Participants begin by assessing their own instructional skills and beliefs, set personalized learning goals aligned with the required course objectives, and then plan a personalized pathway to improve desired skills. The course instructor requires students to complete specific assignments and makes individualized recommendations as needed throughout the course. Participants receive rapid feedback on small applications of theory to practice throughout the module. This personalized practice is designed to offer a learning experience with mastery orientation bridging theory to practice by offering points for classroom tryouts and analyzing student work. Through this experience educators experience personalization from both a teacher perspective and learner experience.

## Personalization Aspects

Personalized Teacher Practice addresses five key components of personalized learning: 1. student-driven learning, 2. bridge from theory to practice, 3. rapid feedback, 4. anywhere - any time, 5. teacher role, and 6. multiple pathways to reach and move beyond common objectives.

### Student Driven expand\_more

The personalized structured choice assignment requires students to use a continuous cycle of reflecting, goal-setting, action taking, and monitoring to acquire and extend specific competencies to effectively serve ENLs.

### Bridge from Theory to Practice expand\_more

This personalized assignment invites our students to demonstrate growth in their abilities to know and use knowledge and theories of teaching ENLs.

### Rapid Feedback expand\_more

When waiting for instructor feedback at the end of large assignments there is little opportunity to apply the feedback through revisions. Instead, in this format, all students must turn in small assignments weekly and will receive feedback within a few days. The point structure for the assignments is “all or none.” In this way, students need to revise assignments to demonstrate mastery to receive points, promoting self-regulated learning.

### Anywhere - Anytime expand\_more

Typically, students move through a course completing assignments in a sequenced order. This is particularly difficult as HGSE students are simultaneously in practical school experiences confronting challenges that do not occur in a planned sequence. Some HGSE students may need to support student writing immediately, however, writing may not be a module topic until session seven. Through this flexible assignment, HGSE students can align their homework to the sequence of module topics, completing urgently relevant assignments for their own teaching.

### Teacher Role expand\_more

Module faculty coach student decision-making, provide rapid and frequent feedback toward individualized goals, and monitor the impact of course assignments on student growth versus achievement throughout the personalized assignment.

### Multiple Pathways expand\_more

The title Dimensions of Diversity begs of a course structure that embraces and extends the wide range of student abilities by providing multiple means to acquire and demonstrate growing expertise.

## Scalability

The structure of this assignment and use of tools in Canvas (such as automatic feedback linked to task recommendations in surveys and quizzes) can be imported and modified by other instructors. The systems and structures make this assignment sustainable and practical. The format enables instructors to imagine how they could begin personalization with a small aspect of a course, for example modifying homework and pieces of large assignments
