Step 2

Read the lesson plan: I Believe You Don’t Have to Move to Live in A Better Community. Think about how you would support students in writing their own "This I Believe" essays. Determine what steps would have to come next to ensure every student was able to write an essay.

Step 3

Choose a WIDA Writing standard to create a lesson plan to develop writing skills. Assume students in the class who are engaging in the lesson will span at least three WIDA levels in terms of proficiency with writing.

Create a lesson focused on writing.

  • Option 1 - Create the next lesson for the "This I Believe" lesson from Step 2. You would create the lesson that comes after the students read the essay and focused on past tense verbs.
  • Option 2 - Explore possible writing prompts from the New York Times. Create a lesson plan where students use one or more of these prompts to write an argument essay. Click here for tips on writing arguments from the New York Times.

Note: If the options don’t have a lesson plan that interests you, then find a lesson on writing from one of these websites or modify a lesson from a lesson plan website (such as those listed below) or upload one of your own lesson plans that demonstrates progress towards the WIDA standard you have chosen.

Answer the following questions on your Capstone Google Slideshow (template here if you have not started) in addition to links to any materials created or used: 
  1. Name of the Assignment (1R, 2T, 3C, etc) as the title of the slide and answers to the following questions:
    1. What you learned or your most significant take away from the assignment.
    2. To learn more, what might your next steps be?

Reflection: Answer the following questions on a Capstone slide

  1. Thinking about your lesson. You can choose one or all questions, or parts from each question. (150-250 words total)

    1. How does TPR support students in achieving the learning objectives?

    2. How does your lesson give opportunity for all students to participate actively in the learning? Where does it fall short?

    3. How challenging was it to integrate TPR in your context or for this topic? How do you think students would react to using TPR?

  2. Takeaways: You can choose one or all questions, or parts from each question. (200-250 words)

    1. What was your most significant take away from the assignment? What did you find interesting and useful?

    2. What was most challenging in the task? How did you overcome that challenge?

    3. How will you apply your learning to practice?

    4. To learn more, what might your next steps be?
